Mystery Pattern

A member of Ravelry posted a photo of a baby afghan and wanted to know if anyone knew the stitch. No one seemed to, but one member, with far more knowledge than I of reverse engineering, was able to figure it out. She posted photos of her work, back and front so we could see the construction. Since it would be improper to give out the pattern, those of us interested had to try and reverse engineer HER sample. I was able to do so....and here is the result...

I am so in love with this pattern stitch...it makes a 3 dimensional shell or scallop...I actually think it looks like crowns. Its not hard to create but does take time. I think it would make not only a lovely afghan but a beautiful shawl done in fingering weight with a larger hook. The top photo is the front and the second photo is the reverse. The loops on the edges are for weaving a ribbon in and out of.

I wish I could share the pattern but if you are clever enough, you could probably figure it out as I did. If you need more help, check out the" Shell blanket disection" thread in the" Crochet On Ravelry" group....there are more photos there. Good luck!

Go Green Market Tote

This was a spur of the moment project. Someone on Ravelry recommended it and when I took a look, I was impressed. So this morning I sat down and as I watched the news, I made one. Took 3 hours from start to finish....

This design incorporates a CD into the bottom for a nice stable base. You dont have to put it in, but I did and I like how it came out. You can also make a shorter handle for it. Find the instructions HERE.

I was going crazy trying to decide what I can make the ladies of the family for Christmas....now I know. This will make a nice little gift. Give it a try....for yourself OR for a gift. It's easy and fast!

Knooking

I dont know if any of you are familiar with the technique of "Knooking". It's knitting with a crochet hook. Different from Tunisian in that it creates true knit and purl stitches. I have experimented with it using a cabled crohook.

Recently, Leisure Arts created a Knooking kit....

I should have taken a photo of it before I used it....the kit includes 3 wooden hooks, 3 satin cables and an instruction book for both right and left handers. I found out about it on Ravelry and purchased it. It is exclusively available at Wal-Mart until Sept. when it will be more widely available.

It's a interesting way to knit without needles and its relatively easy for a crocheter. It does take a little practice because you have to YO differently than you normally do, but its pretty much just inserting the hook in the stitch, YO and pull through. The cable substitutes for what would normally be a needle and holds the stitches while you work. And, as you can see, it does create a true knitted fabric....

The kit is rather inexpensive....$6.97 plus tax, of course. The only drawback I found is the wooden hooks....I never have liked wood that wasn't prepared in some way....polished, waxed. The stitches don't move smoothly along the shaft. I used some waxed paper and rubbed it over the hook....that did help some. Use of the hook will help more, I am sure. But a perfect kit would have metal hooks. Still, for a beginner, I can't really complain. If you have an interest in Knooking, there are also videos like THIS one that explain the technique. Although this is a video for right handers, there are also some for those of you who are left handed.

If you are like me and appreciate the look of knitting but dont really like or want to knit with needles, this may be an option. I am hoping that, in the future, there will be more patterns....and a way to work in the round. But this is a fun start....if you can get a kit, give it a try. :)

In Memory of Jean Leinhauser

Most of us who have been crocheting for a long time will know the name of Jean Leinhauser. She was a pioneer in the art of crochet, an author of countless books and moderator of the Yahoo group "Crochet Partners". Jean was trained as a journalist and began her professional needlework career as a design director for the Boye Needle Company. She left Boye to found Leisure Arts publishing and later founded the American School of Needlework Publishing Co. She recently contributed the masters program for the CGOA. Throughout her life, Jean was always available to those in need of crochet help and a friend to many who never met her except through e-mails. Her "101 Stitches for Afghans" has always been my go-to book for stitch patterns. Jean passed away on June 15th of a heart attack.....a shock to all. But her spirit, her love of crochet and her tireless work to keep crochet an important part of the yarn arts industry will never be forgotten. If you are new to crochet and not familiar with Jean's work, do check out some of her books....she was a great teacher and crochet artist.

Rest in Peace, Jean.....and thank you for the legacy you have left for all crocheters!

Ice Cream Cover Up

I originally wasn't going to crochet anything for the grandkids birthdays, but I found THIS pattern for a girls swimsuit cover up and it seemed like something I could do rather quickly and I was right....took 2 days. I just finished in a short time ago. This is for Sydney...she will be 4 on Sunday.

I made some changes in the pattern...added the ruffling around the skirt and sleeve edges and shaped the hood a bit differently. I used Bernat Cool Crochet (which is discontinued) instead of the #3 crochet cotton. I knew I would find a use for that yarn...its perfect for a project like this....lightweight and the mesh makes it pretty stretchy.

This pattern is made from the top down and could be easily adapted for a much larger size. I might try making one for myself.

Oh....and I want to thank all of you for your well wishes during my illness. I am feeling MUCH better now and hope to stay that way. I am losing weight and looking forward to swimming weather when the pool opens in about a month.

Medical Hiatus

Sorry I haven't been around but I have been sick for the past 4 weeks. Just got out of the hospital on Wednesday and I am still not totally well. I was a mystery patient.....no one could figure out what was wrong with me. They did find out I have diabetes, which I am taking care of. But for the other, I am still not 100%. I haven't felt like crocheting...can't concentrate on it at the moment. But I hope to be better soon and back to my favorite past time. So bear with me while RL gets in the way and I will be back ASAP! Till then....

My Other Passion

I know this is a crochet blog, but I also enjoy making jewelry for myself and as gifts. I put aside my hooks for a day and went into my extensive bead stash and made a few things...

This I call the Sea Spray Pendant and Bracelet. And this....

..... I dont have a name for. If you have a suggestion, post one. :)

I have as much fun making jewelry as I do crocheting but it takes up a lot more room to do between my bead board, my tools and all the beads and findings I have to keep handy. Its great to be able to wear something you made, whether its from yarn or beads.

Soft and Comfy Slippers

I whipped these up in a few hours last night and this morning. This is one of those patterns I have been trying to fit in between other things. I bought the yarn (Vanna's Choice) earlier in the week and last night finally sat down and started them. Got one and a half done and finished up a short time ago. They are a great slipper and Vanna's is a perfect yarn for them....nice and stretchy with great memory. You use different sized hooks to get different sizes of the slipper....I used a G hook for mine. They fit great and I know they will wash just as well. Beaded Cobweb Lace Scarf

This scarf has been in my WIP pile for quite some time. I pulled it out about a week ago determined to finish it...I only had 3 rows to go. Well, I saw it sitting on my office chair and decided it was time to get it done.

This is the Beaded Cobweb Lace Scarf...a really nice pattern. The Aunt Lydia's Bamboo Thread is perfect for this project.....terrific drape. And the beads add just a little sparkle. I dont know how it happened but I started this scarf on March 28th 2010 and I finished it today, March 28th 2011. I swear I had NO idea that its a year to the very day! I originally was going to give it as a gift, but I fell in love with it and I decided to be a little selfish and keep it for myself. I cant wait to wear it!

This is a slow project but good for a take along. The beading takes time because you have to switch hooks to add a bead, then switch back to continue with the pattern. Still, its worth the effort. Give it a try!

My New Yarn Bowl

I have always wanted one of these pretty bowls, but the prices were a bit too high for me. They are certainly worth the price and I don't blame a crafter charging what they do....I just have to be a bit more practical. But I came across this little bowl on Etsy and I couldn't resist. It was about $10 less than most of the other bowls...and its cute besides.

I found a couple more styles I favorited and will save my pennies for. They do serve a practical purpose and do it beautifully. But I also have a plastic jar, that I melted a hole in the lid with a candle, which I use for the same purpose.

I will have to hide this from my boyfriend... or.he will use it as an ice cream bowl. :D

Give a Little Love

A request went up on Ravelry for some small comfort gifts to be given to ladies who are undergoing chemotherapy at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. I couldn't say no. I made some small jewelry items and a couple soap savers.....this is one of them....

This pattern is called the Talula Turtle Soap Cover by Maggie Weldon. Unfortunately I cant give a link to the pattern. For some strange reason, the day after I printed out the pattern and linked to it on Ravelry (which was only yesterday), it mysteriously disappeared. Perhaps the designer will share it again one day. If so, I will amend this post and provide the link. It's made from #10 crochet cotton and a #6 (1.75 mm) hook. The beads on the ties were my own idea. When I was younger, this would have been a much easier pattern but my eyes and hands aren't what they used to be. Still, it was fun to make and I like the way he came out.

An Inspirational Moment

I started this project last year and recently brought it out of my WIP basket to work on again. It was originally an afghan pattern but that changed. I finished 5 of the motifs and held it up to look at it. And it hit me....wouldn't this make a lovely shawl? So I wrapped around me and I LOVED how it looked. So that was it....good bye afghan....hello shawl.

The pattern is from the Leisure Arts booklet "Absolutely Gorgeous Pineapple Afghans". The first motif was a learning curve for me but after the first, I pretty much had the technique down. If you are adventurous, check out the pattern and try this....I think you will like it. :)

Carefree Cardigan

I got happily lured into a CAL on Ravelry for the Carefree Cardigan from The Crochet Closet by Lisa Gentry. I have had the book for while now but never seemed to get motivated enough to try anything from it....the CAL was a great incentive. If you belong to Ravelry, you can check out my projects page where I have the project photos broken down into completed sections of the garment.

Ron took the photo for me, so thanks to him for that. This is the first really wearable sweater I have ever made...working from the top down is SO much easier.....no seams and you can make it any length you want. I made mine with 3/4 length sleeves because I dont like long sleeve sweaters. I used Caron Country in Renaissance Rose. Check out the pattern and give it a try. I find it runs big so if you make it, use the yoke as a guide for size....if it seems too wide, use a smaller hook. I did a gauge swatch, thought it was right, but the stitch pattern made the yarn VERY stretchy. :)

Circle in a Square Pillow

I found THIS pattern in my Ravelry travels and thought it would make a nice gift for my DIL...she seems to like colorful things.

Its easy to make...the motifs dont take long to crochet. I used mattress stitch to join them and added a zipper so the cover can be easily washed. This would make a pretty afghan and I only used the leftover Vanna's yarn from the Rainbow Ripple Blankets I made.

I keep telling myself to start making things for myself or to sell.....but I get such pleasure out of crocheting for others. Still, MUST.STOP....LOL! (At least for a little while)

I started another Crochet Corner column for Ravelry. Not sure when it will be published but you can keep a lookout for it.

X-tra Thick Unisex Textured Slippers

My son asked me to make him a new pair of slippers and I wanted to try out a new pattern. I went on a search for a relatively easy pattern and found THIS one.

I like the fact that you dont have to make separate soles and stitch them together. I started a pair like that and lost interest. So I tried these and I was sold on them. Easy to make and very little sewing (just the seam in the back). I made them larger for my big footed son by using a J hook and increasing the amount of rows. I think he will like them....heck, I like them and may just make myself a pair.

Christmas crocheting is finally finished! To all of you who celebrates, have a WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Rainbow Ripple Afghan

I finally finished this afghan which I am giving to Annie for Christmas (I am currently making an identical one for Naomi). It looks a bit like a color card for Vanna's Choice yarn, but I think its perfect for anyone who likes a bit of color and it will go with just about anything. I made it adult size so unless something disastrous happens, they should have this forever. The yarn should last a good long time as long as its cared for properly, although you cant do much to acrylic.

You can find the pattern HERE (I believe you have to register with Bernat to view it but registration is just giving an e-mail address, if I remember correctly). The patten is easy and quickly memorizable. I used a G hook so I got a heavier, denser blanket. Each color section used 3/4 of a skein, so you can count how many skeins I had to buy. And the picture doesn't show the entire length....there is about another 24 inches behind the chair. If I sold this blanket, I would probably have to charge between 3 and 5 hundred dollars for it, so its certainly not an inexpensive project.

However, THIS.....

.....is not expensive. Its the Branching Leaves Scarf and it only took one skein of Lustersheen. Not sure who I am going to give this one to, but I plan on making another one....with beads.

Quick Stitch Cowl

Here is a really quick and easy project for you or as a gift. I found it in the current issue of Crochet World magazine. It's made with Homespun, which is the bane of many crocheters (myself included) but once you get past the foundation chain, it's very easy because its made almost entirely of post stitches. The Homespun is actually perfect for this cowl....adds bulk without a lot of weight and the colors just add to the look. This one I made as a gift but the next one is for me. Perfect if you don't want "hat hair" but need a little protection from the cold. It's made to be worn either down around the neck only or pulled up onto the head. Check out the magazine....there are some nice holiday patterns in it.

"Have Fun Stormin' the Castle" Afghan

As I mentioned in my previous entry, here is William's Christmas present.....

As soon as I saw the pattern I immediately thought of blocks and the way the pattern colors I chose were stacked after a few rows, reminded me of a castle wall, so I named it after one of my favorite movie lines. William is into castles and knights so I though it would be perfect. The colors are similar to the ones I used in the Pinwheel Afghan, but they are not the same, nor even the same manufacturer. I think they are great for a kid and I made the afghan about 5 ft. long so he will have plenty of time to use it. You can find the pattern HERE.

Water Ice Afghan

I decided to make afghans for all the little kids and this is the first one I have finished. Its for Sydney, since I am sure she has outgrown the baby afghan I made for her.....

This pattern comes from the Leisure Arts booklet, "Circular Baby Afghans". Its the colors I decided to use that make it stand out from any other ripple ghan. And the edging is different, too. I used the Simply Soft Brites, which makes it look, IMO, like Italian water ice colors....hence the name I gave it.

Now I have to work on finishing William's afghan...which will probably be my next entry here.

Not Another Dishcloth??

Well, yes and no. I would have to say that this is NOT just another dishcloth.

This one was made in Short Row Tunisian....which I never tried before and I am totally impressed with the technique. Its made in one piece with the first and last rows sewn together. You can find the pattern HERE. There is a video on the site but I never watched it.....the written pattern was enough for me and I had it memorized after I finished the first section. But if you are totally unfamiliar with Tunisian, I would recommend viewing it. These cloths look knitted on the right side, but they are crocheted.

I whipped up one in a couple hours.....made 2 on the 3 hour trip back and forth for my son's wedding. Give it a try if only to learn the technique. It might tempt you to learn more about Tunisian.

An Experiment

Sorry that I have been out of touch. My mother passed away and I haven't had much time to devote to my online pursuits. But I do have this to share.

Some time ago, I found THIS baby pattern on the blog of an online friend which was translated from the original Portuguese. I planned on making the sweater but had no baby to make it for. So I thought about it and wondered how it would look in an adult size. So I found a pound of mill ends in a craft store, upped the hook size to a J and decided to give it a try. This is the result.......

Its about a small/medium size and although it wouldn't fit me, I knew it would fit my mother. But she didn't live long enough to wear it. So I brought it home and will try to find someone else that can use it. I do plan on trying to enlarge the pattern even more so I can make one for myself. But if you are a small sized lady or you know a young girl that might like this, do try it. You can adjust the length of the body and sleeves very easily.

If you feel adventurous, you could get some bulky yarn, an M hook and try the pattern. It should give you a size Large. :)

Fireworks Afghan

Note to Self: NEVER make another afghan in Catherine's Wheel Stitch unless poking yourself with crochet hooks isn't masochistic enough. :D

Seriously, It took me what seemed forever to finish this ghan. It was SO boring that I regretted starting it after only a few rows. But stubborn woman that I am, I wanted to make it. NEVER AGAIN! The stitch is nice but one row doesn't get you very far with all the stitches you have to do for each wheel. I edged it in 3 rows of sc in the BLO and one row of crab stitch....which didnt take long at all.

If you are curious, you can do an online search for "catherine's wheel stitch" and you should find some directions. I got mine from a book but since stitches aren't copyrighted you can put them anywhere.

I am glad its finished so I can move on to other things. This project is one reason it took me so long to post....I haven't been able to finish anything else.

Yes, I am Still Alive!

I keep coming back to my blog but have had no new projects to share. Not because I haven't been crocheting....I do that every day. But the projects are taking time and I am not finished with them.....and I prefer to share finished work.

However, I do have a couple projects that are nearing completion and hope to post about those soon. In between my crocheting, I have made a couple videos for Ravelry which I want to share. This is a short one which explains how to do a no-chain beginning dc. Its easy and a lot of people have found it helpful.....

For those of you who regularly check out my blog, you may have noticed things are a bit different. After almost 3 years of blogging, I thought it was time for a new look.....I hope you like it. :)

In between posting my work, I am going to occasionally look for some feedback from my readers by asking some crochet questions to which people can post their answers. I thought this would add a little depth to the blog. :)

For my first question, I am going to ask what are you all working on right now? I started working on a summer top....the Sea Breeze Top. And I just bought the thread and beads to make the Beaded Cobweb Lace Scarf....looking forward to starting that.

A New Video

I was asked on Ravelry if I could explain how to do cables in crochet. Rather than just do step by step photos, which you can already find online, I decided to make my second video on the subject....

This is the most common method of doing cables, but you can make wider cables or narrower ones. I am currently working on an afghan with a 3 stitch cable, with only one crossover. Cables are a great way to add texture and interest to a pattern. If you have never tried making cables, maybe my video will help. I hope so. :)

And Now For Something Completely Different....

I like thongs and was lucky enough to come across THIS pattern for this one. It calls for crochet cotton and a B hook. Being a little on the larger size, I used a C hook and sock weight yarn. I started one in Panda Cotton, but didnt have enough yarn to finish, so I found a skein of Sockina Cotton in my stash and tried using that. This is how it came out.

I made a couple changes in mine. I made it in one piece and connected the sides instead of using ties and I left out the side straps in the back. But it fits....and comfortably! I am going to finish the other one as soon as I get some more yarn.

If you dont like thongs, you could make the back the same as the front, only a little larger....the pattern is repetitive. There is also a chart that makes the pattern very easy to follow, however it is hand drawn and very small, so you might need a magnifying glass or a way to enlarge it, but it DOES help. The link page is in mostly in German but at the bottom there is a PDF link for the pattern in English. I hope you give it a try.

My Spa Cloth

I am very into spa items. I like a little luxury in my bath. So I wanted a luxurious face/body cloth that would be soft, yet be textured enough to exfoliate. I made this up myself and have put it on my pattern page, if you want to try it. It makes a thicker cloth, which I prefer. And I wanted to make something I could sell without needing permission from a designer.

I like this pattern so much, I will probably make a face towel and maybe a soap saver. If I do, I will post those as well.

Heirloom Baby Blanket

The first time I saw this blanket about 3 weeks ago, I just HAD to make it. Fortunately, someone asked me if I could make a baby afghan for them to give as a gift. So I sat down and started working on this beauty. Everything went smooth.....till row 9. Then I was totally confused. I did a little research and found out that others had been confused as well. I tried a couple suggestions...still didn't work.

So I was browsing in the grocery store a few days later and found that Crochet Today had published a magazine with their All Time Best Blankets, and what should I find inside but the same blanket pattern. Well, I thought that, perhaps, the pattern had been revised and I could have give it another try. No such luck.....still stuck at row 9. I was ready to throw the thing in the trash when I happened to see something in the pattern notes, which read, “Refer to the stitch diagram while working this pattern. which will clarify the complex instructions.” And I said, "Diagrams? What diagrams?" So I turned a couple pages and there they were....the charts for the blanket. It was a cloud parting moment. I went to row 9 on the chart and Ah HA! THAT'S what she means! And on I went. I didn't look at the written instructions again.

And this is the result. I am very pleased with how it came out. I used sport weight yarn instead of baby yarn and a G hook. You can find the text pattern HERE. If you need the charts, you will have to get the magazine. but its worth it. If there is a baby in the future for you or someone you know, this blanket will be treasured.

I have been wanting to do this dish scrubbie ever since I first saw it ages ago. You can find the pattern HERE. Mine came out bigger because I used a larger scrubbie and had to make more sc's around the edge. But I actually like the fact that it's a little bigger. This is a great little gift item or even better in your OWN kitchen. A quick project with a practical use. :) Enjoy!

My First Video!

I finally did it. I figured out how to successfully create a video with my new camcorder AND upload it to YouTube. I did the video mainly for my crochet column on Ravelry, but I was told I should link it here, too...so I did. Its a short tutorial on how to do a single crochet foundation row. Teacher's Friend Pocket Scarf

I got a couple photos from my friend of some holiday projects I completed. These scarves are my own design and were given to a couple ladies on my b/f's side of the family. I had fun making them and I might make myself one....it would come in handy. When I do, I will copy down the pattern and put it on my pattern page.

The first scarf was made from Bernat Worsted....the big skeins. The blue one was made with Simply Soft. I call it the "Teacher's Friend" because I wish I had had one when I was teaching...would have helped at recess time. :)

We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties.....

This is VERY frustrating. I had a bunch of holiday gifts to show but my camera decided to conk out on me. :( I thought it was the battery but it wasnt...so I spent money on a battery I didnt really need. I gave the camera to a friend who is supposed to look at it but with the holidays, he really hasnt had the time.

I cant really complain....that camera has been working perfectly for 7 years. Nothing lasts forever. If I cant get it fixed, I will have to get a new camera. In the meantime, I havent gone anywhere. Two Little Mittens....

I wanted to make some mittens for Christmas gifts but was having trouble finding a pattern that was more than just a tube with a hole for a thumb. I was very happy to find THIS pattern (scroll down to the last row of pattern links). However, it called for baby yarn and I was not liking the result. So I decided to use a sport (DK) weight yarn and this is how they come out.....

They are a little small for me, but that means they would fit a small woman's hand....I would just have to add a couple rows for the hand and thumb and they would be perfect. I like the pattern because there is a thumb shaping added which makes the thumb more like a thumb instead of just something sticking out the side. Hope that makes sense. :)

They are an easy pattern, but I think they are really nice. Depending on the color, they would work for any gender. Give them a try!

A Touch of Antiquity

I was searching for a nice hostess gift I could give this Thanksgiving when I came across the pattern for this bread cloth....I thought it was perfect! I dont work much with thread, mainly because of the hooks (Note to self...need to get thicker handled steel hooks). But this cloth only took me 4 days of off and on work to complete. I love the design. You can find the pattern HERE.

The pattern calls for size 20 thread with a size 9 hook, but I used size 10 thread with a size 7 hook because thats small enough. :) I also used ecru instead of white thread because I like that antique look. This would even make a nice gift for a church to cover the Communion bread plate. If you like filet and you need a little gift, this might fit the bill. I am planning on making another one for a Christmas gift....its already on the hook!

Going Around Again

I really liked that pinwheel pattern that I made the coaster out of and I wondered if I could use it for something else? I also have a bunch of sock yarn that I didnt necessarily have to make socks with. Put the 2 together and I came up with this beret....

Its easy, although the sc makes it a bit slow when you get nearer the end. I used Serenity Sock Weight with a size "G" hook. I love the way the yarn follows the rhythm of the pattern. The brim I improvised with alternating dc and sc rows, decreasing as I went along. Then I crab stitched around the edge to finish it off. I am going to keep it for a Christmas gift and I already started another beret using Elann Esprit, which is too thick for crocheted socks. And that one I am keeping for myself. :)

Outside the Box

My latest swap involved a fancy facecloth. You have no idea how many patterns for crocheted facecloths I went through, only to think, "meh".....nothing at all interesting OR fancy. So I got to thinking.....who says you can't use an afghan square for a facecloth? Who, indeed?

So I went on a search through various squares and I found this---->

Its sure fancy. And its not TOO lacy so that it will work well for washing. Actually I had to leave off several rounds because it would have been TOO big and I put a picot edging around it that wasnt in the original pattern. But you can find the pattern for the entire square HERE.

My partner liked her new facecloth......especially the flower in the center, which was the ONLY thing about this square that I wasnt sure about. Glad I was wrong.

So make some fancy facecloths for yourself or for gifts....its that time of year, again. :)

Baby Snuggly

I just finished making this outfit for my son to give as a gift to friends who had a baby a few weeks back. This is one of the prettiest baby outfits I have ever made. I am huge fan of ShiFio's Patterns.....I have about 5 of them now. They arent hard but they are SO pretty...and they arent expensive, either.....they come as PDF's.

This is a Snuggly....essentially its a wearable blanket. Again, I used Emily as my model. This is a 0-3 mos. size, but it has room for growth. Emily is actually more of a preemie sized doll at 18". I did change one thing in the pattern. You are supposed to sew the bottom closed but I chose to leave it open so the baby could wear it longer....you dont have to gather the bottom. Its a very loose garment on purpose, especially the hood. Its just meant to cover the head so if the baby turns its head, it wont smother. The neck is also made loose. But the garment is a good weight....perfect for its purpose. I used 1 1/2 skeins of pink Patons Beehive Baby Sport yarn, one skein of white and an I hook...it called for a G but I wasnt getting the gauge with that. I did well buying the trims....the lace was on sale for 50 cents a yard....and it took 6 yds. The buttons were 99 cents for 5.... I needed ten. The little roses were also 99 cents a pkg.

If you like making baby clothes, like I do, check out the patterns. I really enjoyed making this, and I will be making more from patterns from the same designer. You can sell the items you make from her patterns, too, which is nice of her.

Another Swap

I just finished my next swap project....this Pinwheel Coaster. The original pattern is for a basic, single layer piece but I am not really happy unless I take something basic and embellish it. Using size 10 crochet cotton and a size 7 steel hook, I made a sc circle for a back, sandwiched a CD between, sc'd it all together and added a beaded edging. I hope my partner approves. :)

Knitting on a Crochet Blog??

Sacrelige! Well, no, not really. I just wanted to crow a bit. :) When I was about 8 years old, my mother gave me a partial skein of bright pink baby yarn and a pair of size 2 needles and taught me how to garter stitch, English style. All I ever made was a very funny looking rectangle that I never learned how to bind off. That was my only foray into knitting.

Fast forward many years. I really wanted to learn to knit, but I wanted to learn Continental style, since thats closest to how you crochet and I figured it would be more natural for me. I tried over and over, got disgusted and quit. I bought many books, looked at many videos but STILL I couldnt get it. Well, about 3 days ago, I sat down again with a new book and tried again. I took a photo of what I did and I posted it on Rav and asked if I was doing it right. Well, I found out I wasnt doing it WRONG, but I wasnt doing it the way it was really supposed to be done. So I went back to the videos. Tried weaving the yarn around my fingers the way it all the ladies were showing....but it was awkward and I felt like a 5 year old. Then one lady told me to try holding the yarn whatever way I felt comfortable....after all, there are no KNITTING POLICE to keep me from doing otherwise. So I took her advice. I started holding everthing just the way I would hold it when crocheting. And the clouds parted! And I started knitting. And it was good! LOL! So, behold my first knitting project....Grandmother's Favorite Dishcloth.....

Its not perfect, but to me its just beautiful. Its something I never thought I could do. And I can actually USE it! That makes it even better.
I will continue to practice this knitting thing...he,he... But it will never change my love for crochet. I just wanted to prove I could do it. Thanks for reading.....and....

Seashell Tote

This was a spur of the moment project that I found in the Summer 2009 issue of Interweave Crochet. I never made a tote like this before and I liked the design. I especially like it because you can add rows to the base and it doesnt affect the pattern....you only have to adjust the handle row accordingly. You can also use just about any cotton or acrylic yarn for it. It makes a great beach or market tote and its very easy. Might give it as a gift....not sure yet.

I used Bernat Cool Crochet and a G hook for the body of the tote....and F hook for the handle portion. Cool Crochet is a nice cotton blend yarn. And now that its available in 8.5 oz skeins, its even better. Its on the list of discontinued yarns but you can still find it at the craft stores. If you can get a copy of the Summer IC magazine, this one is a great carry along project. Give it a try!

I decided to show you the other piece I made for my partner. This is called the Starburst Hotpad. For a first attempt, it came out pretty well. Its a neat proceedure. You can find the pattern HERE, and you can find a video that explains how to create the starburst HERE. I didnt find the video till AFTER I was finished but I did figure it out on my own eventually.

I liked this one so much, I made another one for myself....

So now that I have the technique down, I can make more pretty easily and I dont need the pattern now. Give it a try.

More Kitch

Working on a potholder swap that I have to send out by the 8th. So being the efficient person that I am, I decided to make my potholder ahead of time by starting it before I got paired up and surprise my partner by mailing it off right away. Thats the first one.....from the Spring Hotpads/Potholders pattern from Annie's POTD. You may have that one saved if you follow the free patterns. I got a nice e-mail from my partner saying she doesnt care about the color....except she doesnt like pink. OH NO! :) So I dove into potholder patterns and I found the Clownfish (you can find the pattern HERE). A really easy pattern EXCEPT for weaving in the ends. If you hate that, you might want to make the fish in a single color. :)

I will probably make another potholder for my partner, NOT in pink :)....and send her 2, since I still have some time. The flower potholder I will hang onto for another swap.

I know its been awhile since I have posted. I have NOT stopped crocheting....just seems like I am only adding to my already big list of WIP's. I am frogging a couple projects that I am not happy with. Not that they are coming out wrong....they just dont LOOK right on me. Not a major deal. I have been involved with some quickie swaps but forgot to take photos....DUH! Oh well. I promise I WILL take pics of the things I am making for the new swap. Potholders again.....but different ones. I finished one and it came out really nice. Why is it I always make nice things and have to give them away?....LOL! Anyway, when I finish the second one (should be a day or 2) I will post pics.....I think you will like them. :)

I started an outing set for a baby and finished the top. Not sure if I am going to keep it or not. I will post a pic of that, too. I did make a mistake in it but it was a mistake of omission so no one would realize it.......doesnt affect the look at all . Still, I bought better yarn to make it again. Might just donate it to charity. Or maybe someone out there might want to buy it.

My b/day was last week. I treated myself with some money my bro sent to me and went to my LYS. Got some nice baby DK, Mary Beth Temple's book, Hooked For Life and the Mission Falls Goes Crochet pattern booklet. Nearly $100 for everything, but it was nice to be able to spend some money in a local business instead of the BBS's all the time.

Thats about all the catch up news for now. I passed my Blogiversary again. Its been 2 years now that I have been recording my crochet life. Its fun and I hope that everyone that comes here enjoys what I share. I will be back real soon with more projects.

Sydney's Bobble Dress

Actually, the pattern is called Coco's Bobble Dress. The pattern is VERY detailed with many photos of the WIP, so check it out. I think its a cute dress. I did use Cascade Heritage to make it which isnt really appropriate for a dress to be worn in the summer, but I figure its not a play dress and she can wear it with a short sleeve blouse or shirt indoors in the A/C. I might make another one with cotton blend sock yarn, but cotton yarns are even heavier. We'll see :)

I havent blocked it yet...thats the next project. And I bought 4 hanks of the Cascade when I didnt even need 2....so I have more than 2 hanks left. Might have to make something else with it. Any ideas? Each hank is 437 yds.

I am involved in a potholder swap on K&C....looking forward to showing off my potholder here soon!

Lacy Layette

I have always enjoyed making baby outfits and since I haven't made anything for a couple years, I felt like crocheting a baby layette. I have several patterns I have never tried, so I went into my file and found Leisure Arts booklet #2937 with this pattern on the cover.

I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn....soft but VERY splitty. Still it makes a nice set. I let my doll Emily model it for the photos. Although it's a 5 piece set, it's only a 3 pc. set in the booklet but I made booties to match.....I found a cute pattern and substituted the set pattern stitch for the original cuff.

I hope to offer this set for sale soon. It's a 0-3 mos. size. I am also working on a Christening Gown. I hope to sell that as well. It's made from thread and will take me some time to finish. But no hurry :)

My New Toy

I never had any interest in a ball winder. I thought they were more for people who spin or only buy hanks of yarn. Well, JoAnn was having a sale and I was getting a lot of positive feedback about winders. I recently bought some mill ends and they were a mess....

But here is what they look like now....

I Russian Joined the ends of the hanks together while I was winding. That saves a lot of time when I go to use the yarn. I would certainly recommend that if you do a lot of crocheting and have a stash that could use some organization, you would do well to have one of these. They are real easy to use. This model was on sale for $30.

I was inspired by a very nice lady on Ravelry named Kim, who featured the Strawberry Potholder in her projects. I thought it was terrific, so I asked her where she got the pattern. She wrote and told me it was from the Leisure Arts Leaflet # 851. Somewhere in the back of my mind, that sounded familiar, so I went into my pattern file and, lo and behold, I HAD that leaflet! So I made the Strawberry Potholder, but I couldn't stop there. I also made the Rose Square and the Ridged Hexigon. I dug deeper into my patterns and found the #281 leaflet and made the Heart Potholder. I also did the hexigon potholder from leaflet #429. These are all older leaflets from the 80's and I dont think they are still in print but you might be able to find them on E-bay or a similar site.

And then I thought about one more. So I went into my copies of free online patterns and I found the Polish Star Potholder. Something tells me I tried this one years ago and gave up. Well, this time I was able to figure it out and I have to admit it came out pretty nice. You can find the pattern for that one at http://www.freepatterns.com/ . It would make a nice afghan if I had about 10 years of my life to devote to it...LOL!

I will probably sell these, since I already have plenty of potholders. Or if I end up involved in a potholder swap, I am all set. :)

12 to 24 Point Round Ripple Afghan

Ever since I saw this design about a year or so ago, I have been wanting to try one of these. Its not as elaborate as some I have seen, but I didnt want to drag this project out too long. I bought the yarn months ago....the Bernat Chunky was being closed out and the price was great for those 11 oz. skeins. I finally decided to give it a go about a couple weeks ago. And you see the result. I think it came out rather nicely. I used the round ripple instructions on Crochetville as a guide but the increase they use from 12 to 24 is to make small granny squares, sew these on and then continue in the ripple pattern. I am way to lazy to bother with that :D So I improvised a way to stitch diamonds into the ghan for the increases. It worked. I found out later that someone else did their increases in their ghan in a similar fashion. You can find the proceedure HERE.

I gave the ghan to my b/f.....he really liked it. I only wish the Bernat wasnt discontinued....it was a great yarn for this project. If I can find a similar yarn, I may make another one. My son has a round bed and can you imagine how cool this would look on a round bed? :)

I had the bag crocheted....it was the hand sewing that made me put it off. Well, this morning, I got up and said to myself, "I am going to finish that bag today."...and I did.

More Socks

I have been working on this pair of socks for my SIL for a couple weeks, off and on. I think this is the nicest pair I have made yet. I used Regia Silk Color....its a very soft yarn. And not stiff like some sock yarns I have used. Not splitty, either. I am going to get more of this yarn and see if I can find similar types. I want to try making myself a pair.

I have sock making down to a science, now. I can make a pair of socks without a pattern. As long as you understand the parts of a sock and how each relates to the other, its fairly easy to construct one. And if the yarn has enough stretch, it can be very forgiving and you dont have to be perfect on the measurments. After all, socks you buy in a store stretch to fit many foot shapes and sizes. Crocheted socks should do the same.

Sweetheart Ripple Afghan

I have the flu......lucky me. So I am housebound again...sigh....

But that made it a perfect time for me to start working on this ghan. I am making it for my mother for Valentines Day, so that forces me to finish it :) This design can be found in the current issue of Crochet World Magazine.....its on the cover. Kim Guzman is the designer......she is so clever! I love the fact that this ghan is reversable. The heart design is so cute....I know my mother is going to love it! I had to use different yarn because the specified yarn (Simply Soft Heather) wasnt available so I went with RH Soft and its working up just fine.

I didnt work to gauge so this ghan is smaller than it should be, but thats ok because I really want it to be a coverlet for her bed in the nursing home. Because its a hospital bed, everything has to be tucked under the mattress so there is nothing interfering with the bed guards and the mechanism. I didnt want this to be tucked in, so its just wide enough to lay on top of the sheets.

Go out and get this magazine if you can and give it a try. I will post a photo of the finished ghan when I am done.

P.S. I Love You Cap and Keyhole Scarf

I had no intention of doing any kind of designing until after the holidays but this was rather unintentional. I made a pair of the Fingerless Mitts (same pattern that I used last year) for my son's g/f but I couldnt find a scarf and hat pattern that would match it so I made one up. I like the way it came out and am considering writing the pattern down next year.

The P.S. in the pattern name comes from "post stitch", which is what this set is entirely made of. Its a very thick and warm set and I hope she likes it. I know I do :)

Hope everyone out there is enjoying their holiday season. I know things are tough all over but they WILL get better....I have faith :)

World Champion Philadelphia Phillies!

Well, the baseball season is over and it was a wild playoff. But the Phillies pulled it off. My Phillies won the WORLD SERIES and are the Champions!! After 28 years since the LAST World Series win, they finally brought it home. The games were exciting.....the parade today was memorable. I just want to thank the team for a great year and an even BETTER one (if thats possible) next year!

Mike Nesmith Would be Proud

You know who Mike Nesmith is...right? Well, if you don't, he was the lead guitarist of The Monkees. And if you ever saw the tv show, he used to wear a green ski cap....even in the summer. This cap reminds me SO much of his cap.....and it's a classic design. I found out that in Canada, it's called a "toque" but its all the same hat. Find the pattern HERE..... it's super easy and also easy to adjust to any size. This cap was made from the Caron One Pound worsted, but you can use any yarn with a comparable hook. I have made 3 so far...one in rose color Simply Soft with a pom-pom on top. It's a very thick, very warm hat....perfect for winter. I am making these for charity and I think they will do the job. This cap I am crocheting a matching scarf for using the same BLO stitch. It just might become your favorite winter hat pattern. And the mitten patterns on the same page are terrific, too. Enjoy!

I'm BACK!!!

I know its been forever...or so it seems. But family comes first. Now that my mom is settled in the nursing home and her house is sold and finances are taken care of, I can relax and get back into my blogging. And I did NOT forget about the contest. It will officially begin on October 1st. Since I have been gone 3 months, I know a lot of you have given up on me and I want to be fair so that everyone has a chance to win, I will let the contest run for the entire month of October. The prize will be what you see in the photo....3, 50g. balls of Elann Esprit cotton/elastic yarn.....perfect for a pair of crocheted socks! On October 1st, I will post what the contest is about. Its very easy and anyone who crochets can enter.

As for what I have been up to for the past several months, I did NOT stop crocheting. In fact, if you check my Flickr link, you will see several new FO's. I am not going post a lot about them here. Most were gifts for my b/f's grandkids. Right now, I am working on charity pieces....a poncho, a sweater, hair scrunchies, hats, scarves, etc., along with holiday gifts. Most of these I will post about in the near future. On my hook at the moment, is the Dusk Sweater from the Fall edition of Interweave Crochet. Its a pretty easy, but very lovely design. I cant wait to finish it.

Southwest Salsa Sport Socks

How's THAT for alliteration? :)

I still haven't gotten my D's bag done....ran out of yarn. This week I have to take a trip to the craft store. But my sock yarn has been calling to me for quite awhile now and I just HAD to make a pair. I found the basic pattern for this pair HERE, but I changed a few things to make it fit me better. The result was these socks. They are made from my stash of Crystal Palace Panda Cotton. The yarn is SOOO soft and comfortable! The color is Nasturtium and it is HOT! It reminds me of fresh salsa. I wish I had a pair of clear shoes to wear with them. This is not a difficult pattern and I will probably make more.

Butterfly Wing Shawl

I LOVE this shawl. The pattern is definitely a keeper. It's easy but it looks SO elegant. Took me only 2 nights to make it. I used Cotton Plus instead of a laceweight yarn but, surprisingly, it's not heavy and it drapes SOO nicely. Not to mention it's easy care....machine wash and dry. This is the second one I've made and it wont be the last. Find the pattern HERE.

It was a nice day. My D came over and visited with me....we had fun. She brought me a balloon bouquet and some fancy beads from the party store.....she said she was broke :) I told her she didnt have to get me anything.....it was nice just being with her.

When my b/f came home, he had a lovely bouquet of flowers in a pretty mug/vase for me as well as the SWEETEST birthday card. Inside was an envelope with $200 for me to get my hair done! I blubbered like a baby. I was NOT expecting anything since he already spent $400 on new glasses for my birthday. I have the most GENEROUS b/f.....I dont know if I deserve it.

I cant believe it! I missed my Blogiversary! I thought about it last month and then I got wrapped up in family stuff and I totally MISSED it! It was May 16th of last year that I started this blog journey of mine. I have enjoyed every minute of it. But its success is mainly to due to all the wonderful people who have visited my blog and commented on my projects. Without YOU, I would probably have stopped this thing ages ago. It wasnt my intention, initially, to look for people to visit.....I just wanted to have a place to showcase my work. But the warmth and support of all of you has inspired me more than I ever thought I could be. So its partly YOUR blogiversary, too. And to celebrate, I am going to have a contest, which I will go into more detail about later. Its my way of thanking ALL of you for coming here and reading about my crocheting. So stay tuned :)

Mystery Shawl

Yeah....I said I was going to work on the bag. Well, one of the ladies on Ravelry wanted to have a Mystery Laceweight Shawl CAL, so having never made a laceweight shawl before, I couldnt resist. If you have a hankering to CAL, go over to Tracey's blog....the directions are there. You can see here how mine is so far. I am using Patons Lacette and a size "I" hook. The lacette was a bargain....found it at JoAnn's reduced from $6.49 a skein to $2.97. I bought 8 skeins, and should only need 3 for the shawl. I will post more photos as the shawl progresses. I think its a gorgeous pattern and I have never done anything this elaborate before.

An Experiment

I found a pattern in the book Crochet for Babies for the Get Up 'N Go shirt. The pattern calls for it to be made in 2 pieces....front and back....but I wanted to see if I could make it in one piece. And this is the result. Its more a sweater than shirt but I only had 2 seams....underarm and side. I like how it came out. Its a size 2T so its too big for Sydney, but I am going to give it to her anyway....she can wear it next year.

Next up is the Lotus Bag for my D...she will be thrilled since I started it last FALL :D

For Sydney

I dont know why, but I seem to work better under pressure. I dont ENJOY working that way, but I am more productive. I have had Sydney's outfit half done for WEEKS but just decided yesterday that I HAD to finish it since her birthday is next week. So here it is....the Pretty in Pink Sundress and Hat from the Simple Crochet for Cherished Babies book. (If you click the link and scroll down, you will find they show some pages from the book and you can pick up a pattern free! ) I used Cotton Plus and a G hook instead of DK weight yarn and and E hook so its heavier but I like the easy care of the yarn. The shrug I designed myself....I thought the dress needed a LITTLE something so you could dress it up or down. I think its a perfect add on.

Not sure what the next project will be...maybe something for ME? :)

ETA: The outfit was a hit.....especially the shrug. She put it on Sydney right away and she wore it for the rest of the party. Everyone thought it was so cute. I havent seen any patterns for baby shrugs so I just might have to write it down and share it. :)

Carefree Days

I just finished this cardigan and shorts set for William. I am very pleased with how it came out. This is an 18 mos. size but the patterns goes up to a size 4T. The pattern called for a DK yarn, but I used Cotton Plus, which did make it a bit on the heavy side, but I figure an outfit like this is more sportswear than playware. The pattern is from the book, Crochet For Tots by Nancy Queen. Its a very easy pattern......in fact all the patterns in the book are very easy. Some might say boring, but I disagree. Such patterns lend themselves well to changing. You can use different stitch patterns, change the sizes of the sleeves and pants legs, use your imagination and make it your OWN creation.

Now its on to Sydney's outfit.....her birthday is approaching.

The Crochet Liberation Front Patch

This is my latest project. I volunteered to test the pattern for this patch for Share....she designed it for inclusion in the new Crochet Liberation Front crochet pattern book, which will be offered for sale later this year. I am hoping her pattern makes the cut. I really liked it and that was the main reason I volunteered to test the pattern for her. This was really my first foray into anything remotely resembling Tapestry Crochet. Its not tapestry, as the back and the front arent identical. but keeping track of the different colors and picking them up and letting them down correctly took time to master....and using thread and tiny hooks made it even more challenging. After a few messed up tries, I finally got the hang of it. Oh, and the patch isnt narrower at the bottom...thats my lousy camera work. Its an even rectangle :)

Now I just have to figure out where I want to put the patch. I am going to use Heat Bond to adhere it to whatever I finally decide to put it on. A jacket, maybe? Or a project bag? Where ever I put it, though, its going to look cool! Many thanks to Share for giving me the pattern and the opportunity to make this great patch!

I am working on a few things and hope to be done them soon.....especially the sundress hat and diaper cover for Sydney......her first birthday is in May. Hard to believe its been almost a year. Cutting it Close

Here it is....the hoodie sweater I have been working on for the past month. It didnt take me a month to finish it....I got kinda tired of it after I was about 1/2 done and put it aside. But little A's birthday is tomorrow so I was under the gun. Worked on it every day this week and I just finished it this evening. Thank goodness. This was one of the biggest PITA projects I ever did. It was sewing a shirt except you had to make the FABRIC as well as fit it properly and sew it all together. But the finished product is worth the effort, I think. It was good practice too.

Now its on to less stressful stuff :)

Round About Sweater

I just started this a few days ago. Doesn't look like much yet, but its coming along nicely. I have been wanting to try making a sweater and I wanted to make it with as few seams as possible. I found patterns online that were done in the round, but they started at the shoulders.....I wanted to start at the bottom. So I decided to try designing one myself. So far so good. I still have aways to go on the body but its moving along. I chose a pattern with a 2 count pattern stitch so increases and decreases would be easier when the time comes for that. And I am doing the pattern in blo so the sweater has some give to it and isn't stiff. I figure it will be for the coming Fall season so I have plenty of time to work on it. I know most people are thinking about spring wearables but I wanted to take my time with this project.

The yarn I am using is Simply Soft Shadows....I love the colorway. It will go with anything and anything will go with it. I will post more photos as the work progresses. I'm writing the pattern as I go along and hope to try getting it published. We'll see what happens.

Long, Long Time Ago.....

I have mentioned to a few people in the past about my very first crochet project that I started when I was 12....over 40 years ago. Well, I was sifting through some boxes in storage and I found it. So I am posting a photo of it. Not a very GOOD photo but its the best I could do :)

I began making this doily when I was 12 and stopped about 3/4 of the way through....I guess being a teenager got in the way. I picked it up again a couple years later and finished it and have had it ever since. I am NOT crazy about the color, but I was a kid....what did I know? :) Anyway I just thought I would share it.

If you are curious about the pattern, if I remember correctly, I got it from an old Coats and Clarks booklet called "Learn How To....Knit, Crochet, Embroider and Tat". The copy I had belonged to my mother and I think it was from the late 50's but you can still find copies of it online....I looked :)

A WIP Finally Finished :)

Here is a project I started last spring and finally finished yesterday. Its the Boteh Scarf from the Spring 2007 issue of Interweave Crochet. Its a very pretty pattern....easy but it does take time. I used an orphaned skein of LusterSheen in Sage.....got it on clearance about a year ago at Michael's. I only had 2 yards of yarn left over when I finished....talk about cutting it close :) But its a perfect yarn for this project. Hangs SO nicely. Not sure who I am going to give it to, yet.

Unfortunately, the pattern is not available online but if you can get ahold of a copy of the issue, give it a try.

Bargain of the Month

I was going through A.C. Moore today looking at yarn and I am getting more and more frustrated with the selection. Note to chain stores that carry yarn: Start carrying more lighter weight yarns and not so much worsted weight. Worsted weight does NOT lend itself well to many garments. And baby yarn is NO substitute.

Ok, now that I got THAT rant off my chest, here is my find.....10 skeins of Moda Dea Jai Alai. Its an eyelash yarn and I have NO idea what I am going to do with it and I HATE working with eyelash yarn. Plus its not particularly practical. But I couldn't argue with the price....99 cents a skein. If I do nothing else with it, I can make a nice soft scarf. This was the only color I could get the same dye lot in and get a good amount. Its pretty, but I would have prefered the blue/green color they had....but there were only 2 of those left. Still, I am happy :)

P.S. Hope you all had a nice Valentines Day. My b/f and I are going out to dinner TOMORROW night instead because we knew no matter where we went, it would be crowded. I dont mind waiting a night. And I got a lovely Swarovsky crystal rose as my gift....its beautiful!

Not Just a Bib...

This is my favorite baby bib to crochet. You can find the pattern HERE. You can't tell from my pic but it has a fpdc design in it. Its more appearant in the photo on the pattern page. But I like it because it doesn't have ties. Its easy to make....only takes a couple hours. Its not a small bib....it would be too big for a newborn, but an older baby starting on solids would benefit from it.

My b/f visited his little grandson William the other day and the baby's father said they didnt have many bibs for him. So I made this one for him today. Tomorrow my b/f will deliver the bib. I bought some extra cotton ww yarn today to make more.

I havent tried, but you could probably use a finer weight cotton and a smaller hook to make one for a newborn. I might just have to try it. :)

Sock Stash

I normally dont take photos of yarn but I wanted to show the types of yarn I am using for my socks. No, I dont have stock in the companies...he,he.

The Sockina is cotton and acrylic and it comes in 100 gm. skeins. It tells you on the side how much you need for different projects, but, of course, thats for knitting. It looks like it will make a nice sock. :) The Regia is an experiment. Its a wool blend with silk and acrylic. It comes in 50 gm. skeins and feels VERY soft and may just work for this wool allergic soul.....it better, for the price. :) The Panda cotton is the same yarn as I used in my last post in different shades. Looking forward to trying a new pattern with them....with ALL of them, actually.

Nearly done the second sock of the pair....I will update photos soon.

Ok...its official. I am becoming sock obsessed. Here is my latest creation.

I started out with a pattern but for some reason, the directions werent working out so after frogging the darn thing a half dozen times, I gave up and just made a simple sock using sc and esc. Nothing fancy but I like it. I used sock yarn for this one....Crystal Palace Panda Cotton in "Roses". I LOVE the feel of it and its stretchy so it fits nice. I bought 2 other Panda Cotton varigateds so you will probably see more socks in future. But unless I hit the lottery, I wont be buying much more sock yarn....I just spent $150 for SIX pair of socks....OUCH. Not all the same brand of yarn, though. But I have splurged enough for now. :)

Chemo Caps

I finished making 3 Chemo Caps for one of the ladies at K&C...the daughter of a friend has cancer. I have made this cap before in different colors for one of my friends and I really like the style. And I like the added embellishment of the buttons, front and back. I actually like the pattern SO much that I made myself one. You can find the pattern HERE. Its easy, its pretty quick and you can adjust the size very easily. I know there are an infinite number of patterns for caps out there, but this one is my favorite :)

Latest Socks for Me

I just finished my second pair of socks for myself. I like them even better than the first pair and they were easier. I used the same booklet for the pattern and I also used the same Cotton Plus in Thistle. The white is Cotton Ease in Snow. I used the leftover Thistle from the first pair of socks and about 2/3 of a new skein. I used about a 1/3rd of a skein of the Snow. I still have plenty left over if I want to make another pair.

Now its on to the chemo cap I promised to make for K&C.

New Computer

Here is a pic of my new laptop. Its great! Its like having a desktop machine you can just fold up and take most anywhere. I have to admit its NOT light, but since I only move it around the house, its not a problem. I am considering crocheting a case for it since they dont make cases big enough for this monster. Thats what my b/f calls it....the MONSTER :)

It will make my posting and web page work much easier and should last quite a few years. Its about as cutting edge as you can get in a laptop for now. Wasnt cheap but it was a Christmas present. Thanks, honey! :)

Socks for ME!

I made these socks for myself over the past couple days. It was a bit exasperating. I had one nearly done when I tried it on to measure for length and I couldnt get it over my ankle. I was SO mad but I frogged the whole thing...2 minutes for about 5 hours work....and started over with a larger hook. Thing that got me was my gauge was correct....but the pattern must have been for VERY small people. I had to upsize from an F hook to an I...and then they came out perfect. Thats why socks are so tough to make. The patterns are easy....its the sizing that causes the trouble since there is less stretch in a crocheted sock than there is a knitted one. But I am determined to get really good at crocheting socks.....all kinds.

I got the pattern from a sock booklet I ordered from Annie's Attic. I used Cotton Plus in Thistle. One skein makes one sock with a small amount left over. I think I am going to make another pair in another color.

Secret Santa Swap

I had SO much fun with the Secret Santa Swap on CFL. My partner and I decided to wait till Christmas morning to open our exhanges, so here is what I got.

A wonderful Christmas book and bookmark, (cant wait to read it) some lovely yarn, (have to think of something really special to make with it) a little notebook, a star shaped Christmas photo frame, (maybe I can get someone to take a pic of Ron and I to put in it) some toggle clasps for my jewelry making and a little blown glass ornament. Thank you SO much to my partner Monet....I LOVE everything! I hope you like your gifts too.

Our Tree

I finally got the tree decorated tonight. If I do say so myself, I think it came out beautifully....one of the nicest trees I have ever had. Ron said I did a beautiful job, and considering what a perfectionist he is, that is praise indeed :)

Like a lot of people, I collect ornaments. I always get a few Hallmark ornaments every year, but I also collect other kinds as well...especially blown glass or porcelain. I got this one about a week
ago when we got the tree.

And this one was made in Egypt

and trimmed in 24k gold....all glass and crystal.

And this is my Clara from the Nutcracker. She is all porcelain. She is jointed at the waist and legs and is one of my favorites.

Fingerless Mitts

I have been seeing a lot of fingerless gloves lately. But most of the patterns have been pretty standard and plain. I searched for a good hour before I finally found THIS pattern. These were VERY easy to make...only took a few hours for the pair.....and they are nice and warm. I made them for my D but I think I might make some more to give for gifts in different colors. I used the Simply Soft and I upped the hook size by one to get the proper gauge and they came out great. The pic isnt all that good since I am no expert in modeling while I take a photo, but you get the idea. Check out the pattern and give them a try!

Something Quick and Easy

These Pepperming Candy Coasters are todays Pattern-of-the-Day at Annie's so you only have about 5 more hours to get it. Each coaster took about 15 minutes to make. I tied up the set of 6 to give to my hair dresser tomorrow as a little gift. The other 2 I will find other uses for. You can put a hanger on them and hang them on a tree or use them under a candlestick. You could even join them to make an afghan. Go give them a try!

Tree Skirt

Ijust finished this little tree skirt for my D's tree. She uses my old artificial tree.....a 4 ft., so she doesnt need a full size skirt. The pattern is VERY simple....find it here. As you can see, I didnt embellish it with the ribbon but its not necessary, since I used more than one color. A tip: If you decide to do a stripe instead of a solid color, carry the colors up the side instead of ending them off. Then just sc along the edge to cover them. MUCH easier :)

ETA- 12/12/08: I took a photo of the skirt underneath my D's new, full size tree I think it looks great!

And if you need a festive cape, this is PERFECT! I put it around my shoulders and it works just great. So it has a dual purpose. I used the Lion "Thick and Quick" Chenille.....has a velvet feel to it that is just right for the holidays. But be warned....this skirt only measures 17" and it used 4 skeins. One each of the red and green and 2 of the cream. So if you want to make a larger one, its going to cost you :) Unless you can find a sale....or just substitute 2 strands of worsted.

I just finished my Thanksgiving Bread Basket. I learned a lot making this basket and when I make another one (for myself) I will do a couple things differently. But I think it came out rather nicely. You can find the pattern for this basket AND a Christmas basket HERE. Tomorrow, I will slice up the Cranberry Nut Bread I made and put the inside to give to the hostess.

Now I am going to go and try and finish up my Thanksgiving Turkey Wreath...my own creation. I will post a pic of that when I am finished, even though it will be after the holiday.

Snowflake Afghan

Here is one of several WIP afghans I have going.

This one is my favorite....a Snowflake Afghan. I have 2 rows finished.

The motifs are relatively easy to do....its the joining that

is tedious. A lot of ends to weave in, but its coming out really nice.

I am using Caron Simply Soft in the Country Blue and 2 strands

of Bernat Softee Baby Sparkle in the sport weight. I am starting

to run out of the Sparkle and I havent been able to find any in

the sport weight so far, just the fingering weight, so I hope I have

better luck soon. I wont be able to work on it till after Christmas,

anyway, so its ok. I just wanted to show how it was coming along.

Smiling Snowman

Thats the name of the pattern for this little guy. I just finished him a short time ago. Giving him to the neighbors downstairs....a retired couple. She likes my crocheting and my b/f suggested I make her something. So I saw this guy in the current issue of Hooked on Crochet and I HAD to make him. The only thing I didnt like about making him was the SEWING. I dont like hand sewing. :)

I did a couple things differently than the pattern dictated. For one, I used sport yarn with a strand of white crochet cotton for the hat instead of varigated worsted. I think it came out better. I also used a varigated, double strand crochet cotton and an esc for the scarf....again, I think it looked better. And I crocheted the cuff right on the mitten instead of making is separate and then sewing it on.

Its a little early for snowmen here but what the heck?

SIP (Sock in Progress)

Here is the sock nearly finished. I'ts been like that for several days now.....I just got around to taking a pic so I could post it. I have to have my D try the sock 0n before I do the toe so I can see if I have the proper length. I should be able to finish it up this week, then I'll work on it's mate.

I have started another sock for myself in cotton thread and its coming out very nicely, but it's a toe UP sock instead of a cuff DOWN, like this one.

Still looking for a good Thanksgiving project. Hope I find one soon :)

First Socks

I have been wanting to make a pair of crocheted socks ever since I saw the lovely knitted ones that have been made in K&C. I had seen socks crocheted of regular yarn and they were more like slippers than socks. I wanted regular socks I could wear with shoes. So I was fortunate to find a good book that has step by step instructions about making crocheted socks. The pattern for the socks I am making is in the photo....it's a beginner pattern to get used to the form. Although I have made bootie socks in this fashion, I thought it better to start from the beginning and see how it goes. I am alergic to wool so originally I wanted a cotton blend but I found this Pima cotton and I really liked it so I bought 3 hanks of it....should be enough for a couple pair. I love the color, too. I have the leg, heel and heel turn finished and I have just started on the gusset. If this first sock comes out right, I will continue on to the second one. One thing I like about this pattern is that it's done in one continuous piece. Will post another photo when I am finished.

My Second Favorite Dishcloth

I say these are my second favorite because my favorite is one I make that is a simple square, alternating sc and dc, but I use cotton THREAD, so it takes longer but its a great cloth. THESE, are my next favorite and they make GREAT little gifts....make up quick, too. I use a pattern that is for a regular round dishcloth and omit the first few rounds. I do 48 sc around the scrubbie and then continue with the pattern as written, with one exception......I skip only 2 dc instead of 3 in round 4, so it lays flatter. You end up with more petals, thats all. But you dont even NEED the flower pattern....you could just make a dc circle and make it look like fried eggs, if you wanted :)

Fall Exchange

Today I got my package from my exchange partner and here you can see what I got. A lovely fall shawl. Aren't the colors just gorgeous? I absolutely LOVE it! And I dont have a shawl so it will certainly come in handy on chilly nights. And I got a hazelnut coffee scented candle....mmmm...smells wonderful :) And a skein of Bernat yarn....its soft and fuzzy and I will have to make something special with it. Thank you SO much, partner! As usual, I had a LOT of fun with the exchange.

Been working hard on my Fall Exchange with CFL....and I finally finished this little fellow a little while ago. For only having a small online image and no pattern to go by, I think "Sam"came out pretty well......thats what I call him. I think he kinda LOOKS like a Sam :) I hope my partner likes him. I have attempted to write down the pattern...you can find it on my pattern page.

I started working on another piece to give, as well, but I wasnt that happy with it, which is why I made "Sam"....but if I have the time to finish the other thing, I will send it along too.

The Snowman Scarf

I finally finished my D's Snowman Scarf and I think he came out rather well. I measured him....he is about 5-6 inches wide and SIX FEET LONG! But my D is a tall girl so it wont matter. I hope she likes it.

No pattern for this one....just cast on with your Knifty Knitter and get going. I used the pink colored long loom and used all the pegs....so this scarf is actually a flat tube. Took a lot of yarn.....probably cost me about $40 for everything but its thick and warm. :)

I saw this pretty Mum in the store and had to get it, but had no place to sit it. But I have a LOT of hooks. I had a problem, though.....no hangers. So I figured I had all this yarn.....why not MAKE one :) I found a pattern for this easy one HERE. I decided to use some Lion Homespun I had leftover from a teddy bear I made. Only took me about an hour and a half total to do it. And problem solved.

I think this would make a nice, easy gift item, too...with or without a plant inside :)
